It snowed all last night and this morning.  This afternoon I was snow blowing the drive way and patio and then I spotted the grill looking totally snowed in and lonely on the deck. 
It made me reminisce about summer weather, the windows open, steak cooking on the grill and the smell wafting into the house.  I shook those thoughts off realizing that it will be a long time until I can have that experience again.  Then it dawned on me that all I had to really do is shovel a pathway to the grill, brush the snow off, light it up and part of my daydream would come true.  So, that is exactly what we did tonight and even though it is such a simple thing, it really raised my spirits plus it was delicious.

WHISKEY STEAK GLAZE

Ingredients

3 tablespoons butter
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons minced onion
1 tablespoon minced red peppers
4 Tablespoons beef stock
1 Tablespoons brown sugar
3 Tablespoons Whiskey
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon natural smoke
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon coarse black pepper
1/4 teaspoon Himalayan Sea Salt
1/2 teaspoon crushed red peppers
Directions

Melt butter over low heat; add garlic, onion and red pepper and sauté until tender. Add beef stock, brown sugar, whiskey, Worcestershire sauce, natural smoke, dry mustard, black pepper, salt, and crushed red peppers. Blend well and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Glaze both sides of steak prior to placing on grill and re-glaze each side 2 minutes prior to serving; turn once during the 2 minutes.

  1. I have a friend who is a master at the Barbecue or "Braai" as we call it in South Africa. He is totally useless a cooking, but he can do a steak on the coles that will have you daydream about it for days afterwards.

    He taught me a great trick for doing steaks on the BBQ. He says always bring your meat to room temperature before it hits the gril. Then do one side, until you see drops of the blood starting to seep through to the top. Turn it over and just colour the bottom.

    That way you will have perfect steaks everytime!

    PS: I love the idea of shoveling snow and then doing a barbeque. Who said it should only be a summer activity!
